CONVENTIONS OF OPENING SEQUENCES


  • The main purpose of an opening sequence of a film is in order to entice the audience into watching the film, attracting their attention often through enigma or mystery
  • Establishing the key themes, characters & genres
  • A title sequence, in order to display the main credits of the film
  • FLASH BACKS - a technique often used by production companies in order to rencounter events that previously happened in the story, or previous films in a sequel 
  • FLASH FORWARDS - a technique possibly used to create suspense or understanding for the audience with in the story
  • ESTABLISHING SHOT - used to help orientate the audience, usually focus on setting or location
     - generally a long or extreme long shot
     - used to indicate to the audience where the subsequent action will take place
     - may use famous landmarks or cities to identify where the film is taking place

  • NARRATION - the narrator of a film usually gives the audience information necessary for a full understanding of the plot, setting the scene, creating atmosphere & introducing characters
  • PRODUCTION COMPANY LOGO - the logo is used by the company to brand what they produce such as : 















  • SOUND TRACK - can be either diegetic, non-diegetic or sound effects. Most commonly non-diegetic as it sets the scene for the audience and conveys the type of genre and what to expect for the film. Sound builds up the atmosphere.
